>> live, from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix5 news. >> more than 30 suspicious fires in the east bay, tonight, investigators believe one person started all of them. this guy. >> at least eight east bay cities got torched at some point. the hot spots were highway 4, highway 24, and marsh creek road. christin ayers is standing near one of the crime scenes. christin? >> reporter: yeah guys, you are looking at some of the damage firefighters say james wilson did all over the east bay. set fires that blackened hillsides like this one and got close to home in some cases. by midsummer, the fires were happening frequently.

july 20, this 20-acre fire flared in bay point. a smaller fire in lafayette burned eight acres. then july 30, a series of small fires. firefighters didn't say they believed it was the work of the same serial arsonist. >> we needed to keep that secret so we could catch this person. the one thing we didn't want was for them to go into hiding and feel they were onto them. so we kept that a secret. >> reporter: until today when contra costa fire and cal fire announced this was their man. 29-year-old james wilson. >> this morning mr. wilson was arrested without incident at his residence. >> reporter: he is jailed and facing eight counts. they believe he set upwards 30 fires since april and each fire was worst than the last. >> it is not unusual for a

serial arsonist to escalate. and they start with small seemingly harmless fires. but most of them are not harmless. and they will escalate. >> reporter: what is worse, he did it in the midst of governor brown's emergency drought declaration which could mean a harsher punishment. amazingly, nothing was hurt and no homes burned. wilson is behind bars tonight in martinez. he is on $1 million bail. reporting live in lafayette, christin ayers, kpix5. the rainbow girls are back at it. this is a group of young women who walk into stores and start stealing and stealing a lot. tonight, mark kelly shows us they brought some guys along. >> reporter: it is like washing a flash mob for thieves. one by one, the rainbow crew looking cool and calm struts in, then with impeccable timing, all nine suspects

pounce stuffing pricey perfume and cologne into their bags. you can see one suspect ripping the shelf out to get in the goods. >> in 75 seconds they steal $11,000 worth of merchandise. >> it is truly unbelievable. >> reporter: david heller is president of the merchant's association in the area. he tells all his members to install video surveillance. >> you never know sometimes who is going to be coming into the stores. >> reporter: thanks to high quality surveillance, police captured this crystal clear shot of two of the suspects and have identified three of the nine. but, no arrests yet. the rainbow crew made a quick exit into the night. in san francisco, mark kelly, kpix5. >> the suspects range in ages from 21 to 40. one is wanted for assault with a deadly weapon. another has outstanding warrants for narcotics. in pittsburgh, a murder suspect police say had been

hiding around a corner ambushed a police officer shooting him in the leg. the officer shot back and hit the suspect as well. tonight, that man is under arrest. the police officer will be okay. for the second time in two weeks, terror at the movies. this time, a man armed with a hatchet and a pellet gun went berserk at a theater outside nashville, tennessee. veronica de la cruz with what we know tonight. >> reporter: we don't know of a motive just yet. but tonight, cnn reports the attacker was a paranoid schizophrenic who had been committed four times in the past. [ sound of gunfire ] that's the sound of police shooting at the man they say entered a movie theater this afternoon and went on a rampage. >> it was a lot. a lot of shots. he was coming from the side of the theater. >> reporter: police say the suspect, this 29-year-old, was armed with pepper spray. this hatchet, an also, this pellet gun. he was wearing a backpack on

his chest and a surgical mask. he started blasting people in the theater with pepper spray just as mad max fury road was starting. officers working a traffic accident nearby ran to the theater. >> the gunman opened fire on the south prevent officer. that officer returned his fire and backed away. >> a swat team entered a short time later and the suspect fled. >> ultimately, the suspect came out of the back door of the theater. he was shot, fatally wounded and pronounced deceased here at the scene. >> two women and one man hit with pepper spray were treated at the scene. >> i'm eternally grateful. >> the man sustained a superficial injury to his shoulder from the hatchet. there were only eight people in the theater at the time. tonight a lot of people wonder how could this happen again? >> it makes no sense. lafayette, louisiana two weeks ago, aurora, colorado, three

years ago. >> that really makes it scary. >> it's been the summer we have had. thank you veronica. a traffic nightmare tonight at lax because of a power outage. traffic signals, elevators, escalators all went down just before 8:00 p.m. the electricity came back on a short time ago. but things are still a mess. no word on what caused the blackout. tonight, french investigators say yes. part of a wing that washed ashore is from malaysia airlines flight 370. the chunk was found on the french territory of reunion island. it is big enough that investigators can try to figure out what caused the plane to go down. the boeing 777 dropped off the radar in march of 2014. crews are searching for more debris in the indian ocean. we learned the governor is going to meet with firefighters tomorrow who have been trying to contain the massive rocky fire. that fire is up to almost 70,000 acres. the largest fire in the state.

but firefighters are slowly getting a handle on this one. we just checked in. it is now 30% contained. andria borba says this fire is forcing firefighters to rewrite the manuals. >> reporter: firefighters say the rocky fire has exhibited extreme fire behavior out here over the past several days burning in all directions at once. exactly what the fire fighting textbooks say should never happen. the only thing for certain is between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m., this fire spark up and torches off thousands of more acres. while that did not happen this afternoon, firefighters believe that the marine layer that moved in overnight with the slight amount of rain the fire received may have helped lay this down. this may help them get a line permanently around it and put it completely out. in lake county, i'm andria borba, kpix5. clouds will be on the increase in and around the rocky fire tomorrow, but humidity will remain low. temperatures high. temperatures will 90 to 95

degrees. the smoke from this fire was shoved up the sacramento valley today. wilson walker caught this sunset near mount shasta city. look at how defuse the sunlight is because of all the smoke that has been transported 150 miles up valley all the way toward redding and weed in the northern sacramento valley. we have a rain chance around here coming up as soon as this time tomorrow. that low pressure area right there moves directly over the bay area. there may be rain on the radar this time tomorrow night. we will talk more on that coming. >> thanks paul. the air national guard is fighting the rocky fire. they are using these massive c130s . the mission is they refuel, drop a big load of retardant and go back and do it again. >> it does get tiring after a while with the heat and everything. but got a lot of folks out here helping us out. >> yeah, one of these c130s flew five missions yesterday. almost all the pilots have

civilian jobs but as one put it, this is what they do in their time off. onto campaign 2016. hillary clinton back in the bay area tonight for the money. it cost $2,700 to go to the fundraiser. tomorrow morning, clinton will go to a breakfast fundraiser in san francisco that also costs $2,700 a person. and we are less than 24 hours away from the republican debate. fox news and facebook are hosting it. 10 candidates will share the stage. but allen martin says all eyes are on the wild card. >> reporter: donald trump is riding high in the poll on the eve of the first gop debate. on average, he is pulling higher than his two closest competitors scott walker and jeb bush combined. >> we just got the numbers from south carolina through the roof. iowa, new hampshire. i'm very honored by it what it show the people are tired of

sting. our phil matier asked the mayor about charges of tainted campaign cash. >> it almost read like a comic book. >> reporter: that was mayor ed lee reacting to allegations from raymond chow that he was being prosecuted while mayor ed lee was given a pass. >> i think that is a little sad that he has to try to smear everybody else. >> reporter: at issue? an undercover fbi agent who allegedly funneled $10,000 into the mayor's campaign and was rewarded with a private meeting with him to discuss business opportunities. >> what was your reaction to learn the fbi had funneled undercover money in the campaign? >> again, it's an allegation. we don't know that for a fact. we checked every donation that we have. we do not know of any individual that didn't

legitimately give to our campaign and those we uncovered we returned them. so they were clean. >> do you recall a meeting on front street? with these individuals? >> i recall fundraisers, a lot of meetings. i do not recall any specific meetings of folks. meeting people is one thing. doing something inappropriate is completely different and we have always been very thorough of that. >> have the feds since wently contacted you? >> no they have not. we have been proactive saying is there something here we should pay attention to? >> reporter: still, the fbi did try. >> according to their own filings, they set up an operation aimed at the ed lee campaign. >> they found nothing. >> reporter: one, nothing has been charged. two, there is a question of how much money actually got into

the mayor's campaign. there has only been one check reported. three, that leads the question. was the fbi being scammed by people telling tall stories they weren't going to keep and the mayor was never going to know about? in san francisco, phil matier, kpix5. tonight, an up close look at one of the biggest cocaine busts by the coast guard. they raided a drug sub off the coast of central america. you can see the four guys on board immediately give up. officers then boarded the sub and popped open this hatch. inside, hundreds of bails of cocaine. a total of 16,000 pounds worth about $180 million. >> you board a vessel, you are not sure of the integrity of the vessel or what will come out of the hatch. they have to be prepared for anything. >> the coast guard has raided 25 drug subs over the past ten years but this is by far the

largest. well, tonight, tesla has hit the skids according to some. the stock is down more than 5% in afterhours trades. the palo alto company had a bad second quarter. its net loss tripled after the release of the model x suv. before tech companies, there was the place where you could get spaghetti like grandma used to make. but betty yu shows us times are changing. and changing fast. >> reporter: paulo's restaurant has been serving authentic italian in san jose long before silicon valley was formed. carolyn allen is a second generation owner. she was just four years old when her dad opened the first downtown location in 1958.

paulo's has been in the river mark towers for the last 24 years. she found out a week ago the restaurant would lose its lease. >> it is sad, really sad. but sometimes, it is just time to move on. >> reporter: carolyn says the restaurant will be replaced by a start-up friendly cafeteria and work and play space for techies. she has seen the average age of workers drop about 20 years in recent years. >> it is unfortunate that the history doesn't carry more value and weight. >> reporter: in all those years, customers say the food hasn't changed. >> many standouts include classics with a personal twist. this is the veal shank and this is the house made pepper deli. this is the restaurant's most famous dessert. the canoli recipe was brought over from sicily from the owner's grandfather. >> the food is always perfect here. >> reporter: mark parkinson is coming every night for dinner

approach. clouds returning. gave us another gorgeous sunset tonight. this is going to pass directly over the bay area tomorrow night. that will destabilize the atmosphere tomorrow despite the fact we will see more cloud cover. it will be warmer. widespread 90s away from the water. it is all about the low arriving late tomorrow night. exiting friday morning where the morning commute may be slippery because roads may be wet. we are not talking a ton of rainfall. at most a tenth of an inch. scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms. the fog comes back tonight. showers are possible as soon as thursday evening in the south bay. watch out for the showers friday morning with the risk of a mountain thunderstorm. we want the rain but the lightning could be a serious problem. if it is dry lightning where we get the lightning without the rainfall. we will keep an eye on it for you. san jose, 87 degrees tomorrow. warmer but cloudy. sunnyvale, 87. san mateo, 84. 90 walnut creek, danville, pittsburgh, 85 degrees.
